S-One Labels & Packaging is excited to announce that ReEarth compostable films have been certified as Lomi Approved™. With a Lomi-approved package, one places the empty package into the Lomi countertop composter together with food scraps. This process will turn the items into dirt.
“The Lomi Approved™ certification creates an end-of-life solution for our flexible packaging and an affordable, efficient home composting solution,” stated Tom Hauenstein, VP of Sales, S-OneLP.
The latest EPA study reveals that over 30,000 tons of containers and packaging were landfilled within a 12-month period.
Lomi Approved™ certification elevates S-OneLP’s commitment of offering more sustainable solutions to label and flexible packaging converters and commercial printers.
The following products were tested and certified:
- ReEarth 2.2 mil Metallized Snack Web REE22MSW roll stock
- ReEarth 3.4 mil Metallized, Compostable StandUp Pouch Web REE34MSUP roll stock
- ReEarth 3.4 mil Metallized, Compostable StandUp Pouch Web REE34MSUP primed, printed, E-beam coated, and formed into a pouch
For a product or packaging to be Lomi Approved, the product or packaging must
be proven to:
- Meet standard compost certification requirements, as well as be proven to disintegrate and biodegrade in a composting facility. This means it must transform into CO2 and organic matter in an aerobic composting environment.
- Not contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment or hinder plant growth.
- Physically disintegrate to a minimum threshold size after a Lomi cycle.
The images below show Lomi testing from stages 1-3 of S-OneLP ReEarth 3.4 mil flexible packaging film. The first image shows food scraps added to ReEarth film in a Lomi composter. Stage 3 shows how the film has turned into dirt.
The compostable packaging materials S-OneLP submitted for testing were previously BPI Certified for commercial composting. This packaging is in the process of being tested to achieve TUV OK Compost Home certification. TUV OK signifies that a product is certified to turn into compost in a home compost environment.
