Sustainable Product Choices in Flexible Packaging

Sustainable Product Choices in Flexible Packaging

Every April 22, we’re reminded that our daily choices make a difference. At the heart of Earth Day is a commitment to sustainability—and one area where we can all have an impact is packaging.

“We offer converters the opportunities to transition to a circular economy where packaging waste is minimized,” said Dan Halkyard, Senior Director Product Development, S-OneLP. “Innovations in recyclable, compostable, and bio-based materials are reshaping the future of flexible packaging.”

S-One, the parent company of S-OneLP, is committed to being environmentally conscious and is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact initiative— a call for companies to take action in support of UN goals and issues embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals. Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world.

Recyclable Flexible Packaging
Recyclable flexible packaging is made from materials that can be processed through specialized recycling streams like mono-material such as polyethylene (PE). Unlike traditional multilayer films, which are difficult to separate and recycle, these newer structures are designed to simplify recovery and reduce contamination in waste stream feedstocks.

S-OneLP’s  ReTreve recyclable films are made up of  polyethylene and high-barrier film coextrusions. These flexible packaging pouching films meet the Sustainable Packaging Coalition guidelines for store drop-off recycling. S-OneLP’s ReTreve films deliver high clarity or opacity, excellent heat seal strength, and high- moisture and oxygen barriers. This flexible packaging comes in  4.5 mil clear and white pouch films , 3.5 mil LLDPE sealant films, and 90-gauge clear MDO reverse print films, all of which are certified for store drop off.  Flexible packaging converters have found success with the ReTreve line in applications including bar wrap and flow wrap, snack webs, pouches, and stand-up pouches.

Why it matters:
Supports a circular economy
Reduces landfill waste
Conserves resources

Compostable Flexible Packaging
Compostable films break down into non-toxic components under the right conditions whether in an industrial composting facility or through home composting. Look for flexible packaging made from renewable resources. This environmentally friendly packaging eventually decomposes into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.

Why it matters:
Returns nutrients to the earth
Reduces methane from food-soiled waste in landfills
Supports zero-waste goals

Make sure flexible packaging is certified compostable by organizations like BPI or TÜV  or is Lomi Approved™. With a Lomi-approved package, one places the empty package into the Lomi countertop composter together with food scraps. This process will turn the items into soil amendment.

Bio-Based Flexible Packaging
Bio-based materials are made from renewable biological sources. Some bio-based plastics perform like traditional plastics—but are made with plants. Bio-based films help lower the reliance on fossil fuels and offer a lower carbon footprint.

Why it matters:
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
Supports sustainable agriculture
Fosters innovation in material science

S-OneLP’s bio-based and compostable flexible packaging products include our selection of ReEarth flexible packaging films listed on the USDA BioPreferred Catalog available here. Our ReEarth portfolio includes 3.4 mil Metallized Stand-Up Pouch, 3.3 mil Clear Stand-Up Pouch, and 2.2 mil Metallized Snack Web.

Change Starts with Intentional Choices
As converters choose flexible packaging that’s recyclable, compostable, or bio-based, it’s a step toward a healthier future. The packaging technology is here. The demand is growing.
